Essential Dog Grooming Equipment: A Comprehensive Guide

So, you have decided dog grooming is for you, either for your own dog as or a vocation. Many of the tools you would require for either are basically the same, however, if you are starting a business most tools would need to be heavier duty and it would be wise to have backups of essential items that are required to finish a groom.

While we are not covering the how to dog groom, but focusing on the what you need aspect, advice should be sought before jumping in. Be it from your existing groomer or breeder, if you are grooming your own dog, or in the form of training or mentoring if you are looking to start up grooming yourself.

A good equipment supplier such as Technogroom can help you identify suitable equipment for your requirements as well as giving guidance the options available, maintenance advice, differences between models and generally assist you in selecting equipment to best suit your needs.

A well-equipped dog grooming station is crucial for providing top-notch grooming services. Here's a breakdown of essential tools and why they're indispensable:

Core Equipment

  1. Dog Grooming Table:

    • Stability and Safety: Provides a secure, elevated platform for grooming, reducing strain on your back and ensuring the dog's safety. Some tables will go very low to allow the dog to step on, before raising up to a comfortable working height.
    • Accessibility: Allows for easy access to all parts of the dog's body.
    • Hygiene: Easy to clean and sanitize.
    • Key Points to consider: What space do you have available, some tables move to one side and the other when lifting, our Low Low range go straight up and down avoiding the need for additional clearance. For home grooming a folding table may be more suitable as it can be folded away for storage, however, the dog would need to be lifted onto it, so limited to smaller breeds.

  2. Dog Grooming Bath:

    • Efficient Bathing: A dedicated bathing tub or sink makes the bathing process more efficient and hygienic. While called a "bath" really in effect this should be used as a small contained shower enclosure as you are not filling this with water like a normal bath. In practice this should be avoided, especially with electric lift type baths as the weight of the water can be substantial. A regular bath could be used, however, these are too low and too wide to be used effecively without excessive bending and without using extra space.
    • Safety: As well as allowing you to work at a suitable height, most baths designed for dog bathing will come with a mat or a grid to reduce the risk of slipping and often a riser panel to allow smaller dogs to stand higher, again to avoid unneeded bending. Consideration should also given to the surrounding area to minimise the risk of slipping from any water than may be shed from dogs in or leaving the bath.

  3. Dog Grooming Clippers:

    • Versatile Grooming: High-quality clippers for dog grooming are normally A5 type, which is the industry standard system for dog grooming clippers and blades. In theory, any A5 blade should fit any clipper. However, some incompatibilities can sometimes occur between brands. If grooming professionally really you would want to have 2 A5 clippers to ensure you have a backup, at a push you could use a good trimmer in an emergency to finish of a groom. A5 blades are available in different lengths to leave different lengths of hair. The higher the number the shorter the hair left. The most common sizes to use are #10, #7f and #5f. Blade combs can also be used instead of different sized blades to provide different length of cut. Use the blade size in mm to give an indication as to which size comb to use as an alternative to a blade. There are also a couple of different widths of blade available: Standard, Wide and Narrow. The wide blades will take more hair off with each stroke, and the narrow blade can be used between toes or for creative work.
    • Efficient Clipping: When talking about clippers the speed of the clipper is generally used interchangeably with power, however, a more powerful motor is not necessarily faster. Its fairly uncommon that an A5 clipper will not be powerful enough to clip most coats, however, trimmers tend to have much lighter motors and may struggle to clip heavier coats. Although we have heard of trimmers being used as the mail clipping tool we would not recommend it unless it is for a single dog owner with a fairly light coat. So focusing on speed, this is measured in Strokes Per Minute (SPM) or Rotations Per Minute (RPM), a clipper will have 2 SPM for each RPM, so SPM = RPM / 2. This is due to the rotary motion of the clipper being modified to a side to side blade motion with 2 blade strokes to every motor rotation. A faster clipper will allow you to run take faster strokes, however, this will also cause more heat and wear on your blades. Best practice would be to use the clipper at the slowest speed for the job and oil blades little and often. At least every 10-15 minutes

  4. Dog Grooming Scissors:

    • Detailed Grooming: There is a huge variety of dog grooming scissors ranging from everyday workman scissors to specialised scissors for specific tasks and looks. To start with and for general work a good set of 3 scissors will cover the majority of work. A single sided thinning scissor (or blender) and 2 straight scissors, one 7 - 8 inch (7.78 - 20.32 cm)and another 5 -  6 inch (12.70 - 15.24 cm). These core scissors may be supplemented by some more specialist scissors, such as chunkers, fluffers or curves, to name a few, as you feel the need for them.

Essential Grooming Tools

  1. Dog Grooming Brushes and Combs:

    • Detangling and Removing Loose Hair: A slicker brush and a comb are the minimum you would need for most grooms. The slicker brush is uses to brush through and separate the coat with the comb use to remove any last remaining tangles.
    • Variety of Tools: Different types of brushes and combs are suitable for various coat types. Some short coated breeds may only require a polish with a cloth, however a rubber curry type tool can be used to lift any dander from the skin prior to polishing for best results.

  2. Dog Grooming Dryers and Blasters:

    • Efficient Drying: High-powered dryers and blasters quickly and effectively dry the dog's coat. A blaster uses high-velocity air to literally blast the water off the dogs coat quickly. Many of these also have a heating element to allow the same machine to both blast and finish dry. These are known as combination dryers. Stand alone finishing dryers normally have a slower volume of air with more control over the temperature. These are designed to run longer for finish drying.  Generally, blasters are less expensive. However, they need more maintenance as the motors use carbon brushes, which wear over time. Finish dryers use brushless motors which do not have the same maintenance requirements. Roughly blasters should be serviced every 500-800 hours of use depending on the model. Finish dryers should have an annual maintenance check.
    • Reduced Drying Time: Quickly blasting off most of the water with a blaster and finishing with a finishing dryer should provide the best results and make best use of equipment.

  3. Dog Grooming Shampoo:

    • Clean and Condition: Gentle, pH-balanced shampoos remove dirt, debris, and odours while conditioning the coat. There are many different brands available, however, we find Superfine has a great range that balances cost and quality well.
    • Specialised Formulas: Different types of shampoos cater to specific coat types and conditions.

  4. Dog Grooming Nail Clippers and Styptic Powder:

    • Safe Nail Trimming: Specialized clippers and powder prevent bleeding and promote healthy nails.
    • Regular Maintenance: Regular nail trimming is essential for the dog's overall health and well-being.

    • Styptic Powder

Additional Tools and Supplies

Ear Wipes: For cleaning ears and eyes.
Towels: Traditionally, salons use normal bath towels to dry, which results in a lot of time and money spent washing towels. We are finding good success with customers using shammy-type towels, which can be rung out, re-used, and disinfected with Mlton or similar.

  • Muzzles:

  • Safety: Used to protect yourself and others from bites during grooming procedures.
  • Calmness: Can help to calm anxious or aggressive dogs.
